How to Get the Most from Elastic Band Exercises

Elastic band exercises are a great solution to some of the problems that come from our busy lifestyles.  If you haven’t heard of elastic band exercises, you may think that I am referring to something that you would do to strengthen finger muscles with a rubber band, but this not at all what I mean.  Elastic bands are one of the most popular workout devices because of their portability, value, and overall effectiveness.

What is an Elastic Band?

An elastic band is simply exercise tool modeled on the bungee cord that allows you to attach one side to most any interior architectural feature and then to have a full body workout most anywhere from your own home to a hotel room—even outside if that is your inclination.  Combined with an inflatable exercise ball, elastic bands can give you your own portable gym so that you can stay in shape on business trips or even at home.

Do elastic bands work for everyone?

You see, the elastic band allows you to create as much resistance as you would like.  If you want a great deal of resistance, just stretch the band out further; if you want less, just shorten it.  It is just like a rubber band; the more you stretch it out, the more force you need to pull it. 

What kinds of elastic band exercises can you do?

Basic Curls

One of the simplest and most popular elastic band exercises is the basic arm curl.  You just grab a hold of the handles and then stand on the elastic band.  The more band you capture between you feet the greater the tension you create.  By lifting or bending your arms to different positions, you can work out different sets of your arm muscles.  It’s easy to do and you can do it anywhere.

Abdominal Crunches

One of the more exotic elastic band exercises to help increase core strength is abdominal crunches.  There are two different ways to perform this exercise.  If you have a sliding glass door, you can tether the elastic band to it by simply snaking it through the handle.  Then you lie on your back and do sit-ups as you normally would, except now you can really get the most out of you sits up by holding the handles of the elastic band to your chest.  You can really work your core muscles this way.  Use only your abdominal muscles and feel the burn!

If you really want to add resistance, a more advanced version of this same exercise is to do it while sitting on an exercise ball.  Just sit on the exercise ball and pull yourself up on it.  Now you are really working those abs!
